The rising obesity problem is, in part, caused by the lack of physical activity in our lives today, what are you doing to respond to this?
Regular physical activity in populations around the world is in decline and at the same time, numbers of overweight and obese people are continuing to increase.
We are working to educate people about the energy equation which is the balance between calories consumed and calories expended. Physical activity plays a central role in expending calories and maintaining the required healthy balance.
We believe we have an important role to play in encouraging physical activity particularly among school children and in disadvantaged communities.
Our KaBoom! Skate parks provide young roller-bladers and skateboarders with purpose built, top class facilities in which to exercise and build their skills. The skate parks in the Bronx and Upstate New York were built in partnership with and are owned by the local communities which they serve. The next KaBoom! facility is planned for Staten Island, New York.
The Chappies Under-12 Little League was first established in 2003 as a partnership between Cadbury, the United South African School's Football Association and the South African Football Association. The tournament was first established to help children learn the importance of health and wellbeing, but also learn important life skills that would help them to achieve future success. With over 7,000 teams now entering every year the Chappies Under-12 Football League is the biggest football tournament on earth.
In the UK, we are supporting the training of 10,000 teachers to better equip them to introduce physical activity into the curriculum and we are encouraging each of our individual businesses to back key community initiatives in their area focusing on themes of physical activity and lifestyle improvement.
As well as promoting physical activity in the community we have created a wide variety of programmes dedicated to benefit the health and well-being of our employees including the Bike 4 Life scheme which encourages employees to cycle to and from work by offering them a subsidy on the purchase of a bicycle.
